Following on from our first ever creative interview with Tom Dunn a couple of weeks ago, in which we found out a lot about him as a creative, in today’s blog post we interview the fantastic Leeana Benson, whose voting designs are: To The Moon and Sticks and Stones. Leeana is a Graphic Designer and Artist who has some fantastic pieces of Graphic Design, whose typography work I particularly enjoy.

I’m going to be asking Leeana a few questions about her creativity pursuit, what her biggest influences are, and her unique talents: the art of head banging! We also discover what makes her tick as a creative, so let’s get cracking with today’s creative interview with Leeana Benson.

Tell us a bit about yourself. What’s your main discipline?

I grew up studying drawing/painting technique, mostly people and faces. My mom can look at a face and draw it to likeness, and she taught me at a young age and throughout my whole life. I have been lucky to be able to use that shared knowledge to branch out into digital media. I work full time as a graphic tee designer now, and it is the best job ever.

What are your biggest influences or inspirations as a creative?

That’s always hard for me to put my finger on. Everything inspires me, my dreams quite often (though my boyfriend wants to kill me when I try to relay them). But sometimes inspiration is as simple as seeing two strangers share a kind gesture or acknowledgment. I always want to draw those people and try to capture simple moments.

Can you tell us about your creative process? How does your day shape up?

If I am distracted by something it is impossible to focus on creativity. Needing to be creative at my job is pretty constant, sometimes it’s redundant production or placement work and other times it’s down to that raw, black paint with music blasting in my ears kind of getting creative. Sometimes it’s purely concept. If I feel stuck on anything I walk away from it and switch projects.

Occasionally it’s either grasping at straws or repeating myself. If repeating myself leaves me unsatisfied (and I have some time), I will scroll through Tumblr until a new idea forms. Whether it be a colourway, pose, garment, mood, artwork. Something will catch me and give a new perspective. Surfing Tumblr is actually my favourite way of regaining creative focus.
