Looking for inspiration on your next project? Lacking that all needed motivation to help guide you through your current projects? A great way to do just this is by going to an art gallery, so you can get inspired and gives you a chance to study that of old and current master’s work.

But why is this the case?

How can it really benefit you and your art and help you achieve that motivation which you so badly crave? Let me explain how I benefited from visiting an art gallery and what I took away from it.

How Can It Benefit You?

I went to an art gallery yesterday, which I’ve never actually been to before, (it’s quite embarrassing as it’s a major London gallery, the V&A), and wouldn’t of thought I would get that sort of influence, motivation and inspiration from the gallery, but I really did. With the V&A, it shows lots of disciplines of art and design in one building, which most of it I don’t practise myself.

But this is the first great thing about attending an art gallery with broad disciplines attached to it. It allows you to think of new perspectives, techniques, and ways of working, that you can’t achieve by simply typing the artists name into Google. You get a real appreciation of the art and design which is on show, as your seeing it in the flesh.

Appreciation

I touched on this in my last paragraph, but it can really motivate you to see your favourite art and design on the walls in front of your eyes. If your new to a particular gallery, you can come across a piece of work which was unexpected, and fuel your motivation and inspiration.

Appreciating the artist and designers methods of working, techniques which they used, the colours of the piece, and how it’s communicated to you. Seeing great art and design can stimulate you to produce work when you get home, and can sometimes be so inspiring that you want to produce something straight away.

Don’t Waste This

If you are so inspired to produce something here and there, it’s a good idea to carry a sketchbook around with you, for you to write notes and draw from the things which your so inspired by.

Motivation and inspiration comes and goes, so make sure you take it with both hands, wherever and whenever this arrives. This could be in the form of writing, drawing or just producing something which your influenced by as it can soon disappear before your eyes.

  • Going to art galleries can really inspire your current or next projects
  • This is achieved by seeing great work within your discipline, or better, completely away from it, as you start to get a new perspective on other peoples work
  • From this, you can really appreciate the work that your seeing, resulting in motivation for you to work from
  • However, don’t waste this as it can soon disappear before your very eyes.
