Following on from our hugely successful blog post about ‘Ten Interesting Facts About T-shirts‘, we at Graphic Tide thought it would be a great idea to showcase 10 interesting facts about art in today’s blog post. The world of art is vast, and is always great to discover something new about this big discipline. We discover the largest piece of artwork to the smallest, the most expensive piece of artwork in the world, and share with you Pablo Picasso’s first word as a baby! Can you guess what it is?

But lets get reveal some truly interesting facts about art!

1. The largest piece of artwork was created by Jim Denevan on Frozen Lake Baikal, which required craving ice out of the frozen lake to reveal a piece of artwork, spanning across 9 miles, a crazy distance! I wonder how long that would take me!

2. Willard Wigan created the smallest piece of artwork with a piece of his own stubble, yes, his own stubble! Crazy I know! This incredible piece of work can only be seen through a microscope, and had to work between his own heartbeats – crazy!

3. The oldest piece of art is 42,000 years old, which was found in a Spanish cave, Costa del Sol. The piece of artwork shows a selection of seals – now thats old!

4. ‘The Card Players’ by Paul Cézanne sold for a staggering $250 million to $300 million, and remains the most expensive piece of art in world, incredible! This piece of artwork was sold in 2011 to the Royal Family of Qatar.

5. One of the most famous pieces of art, the ‘Mona Lisa’, was stolen by Vincenzo Peruggia in 1911, one of the Louvre employees. However, it was caught two years later, and has been described as the greatest art theft of the 20th century.

6. Like many masters of art, Vincent Van Gogh didn’t receive any recognition for his work at all during his life, and only sold one painting during his lifetime – poor old Vincent, at least we love his work now!

7. Aelita Andre had a solo show of her own work in New York City in June 2011, aged 4 years old! I wonder what I was doing when I was 4 years old.

8. The Louvre in France is the champion of this race, which is the most visited museum in the whole world, with a staggering 9,720,260 visitors per year.

9. Its said that the creative industry is worth £8million an hour to UK economy, thats a lot of money in one hour!

10. Considered the best artist in the world, Pablo Picasso’s first word was the Spanish word for pencil. Looks like he was destined to be one of the best artists the world has ever seen!
