Well in this post were going to be talking about this important subject, and discussing what you should be putting in your portfolio and your personal website for the world to see. How can new work promote yourself even more and get you introduced to further clients and commissions, and how can this propel your career as an artist or designer, or both? This is the blog post that can help with all of this, so let’s get started with some tips and advice to help you on your way.

Well, How Often Should I Update My Portfolio?

You should be updating your portfolio as often as you can, even everyday if you find the time. Art directors and potential clients often go back to check on their favourite artists and designers to see if they’ve updated. If you haven’t uploaded a new piece of work recently however, after a while of them checking back on you, they’ll give up on you completely. They have the mentality that you have either given up on art, and that your not serious about your professional career in art and design. Don’t make this mistake.

If you complete a new piece of work, whether that’s a graphical or photographic piece, make sure you upload it to your personal website and further platforms like your blog and online portfolio websites like Behance. It’s great that you’ve made a new piece of work, but if you don’t upload it to ‘show it off’ to the world, it’s pointless. It doesn’t serve you any new business or potential clients. Don’t be embarrassed about showing it off either, and think about promoting yourself in a friendly and engaging way. If you receive negative and positive comments, take it on the chin and learn from it, as this is what art and design is all about, and can only help you as an artist (if its constructive that is).

What Should I Produce Though?

Start doing personal projects if you aren’t getting any commissioned work coming through, and begin with the things that interest you, and what you want to show to potential clients. This could be a branding project, a painting, a new favourite location to take that next photographic masterpiece, but as your still actively producing and practising your craft, it can only benefit you. You can suddenly realise that your beginning to upload a lot of work, as it’s the stuff which you want to be producing.

Making New Work Can Increase Your Workflow

As your uploading work on a regular basis, you begin to gain new followers of your work and gain more paid and commissioned work from this. Your new followers want to know what your up to, as they are interested in your development as an artist, and can begin to talk about you, and purchase things from you.

As people start to talk about you, this can lead to the word of mouth effect, and makes you gain even more followers, and so on. Doing work in-between jobs can propel your career forward, and make you grow as an artist. It’s much better than just sitting by your phone all day, waiting for it to ring.

Summary

Produce personal work in-between jobs

Do the things that interest you, and which your good at

You can gain new followers from doing this

If you do create a new piece of art, make sure you upload it

It can propel your career and craft further, and you as an artist

If you’ve liked this blog post, be sure to check out our other blog posts, such as inspiration, resources and featured artists.
